When 52-year-old John Strembridge from Trowbridge, Wiltshire purchased a lottery ticket from the National Lottery’s Set for Life last year, he did not think much of it. After a successful photo shoot with a local aquatic bird known as the Dipper, John decided to stop by a store on his way home to pick up a lottery ticket. John, not thinking he would win, strode into the closest Waitrose store in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and purchased the ticket for the game that evening, a ticket that would forever alter his life.

John bought the ticket on May 18 last year but did not check it until weeks later. He said he was sitting in his van drinking coffee after completing a day of plastering when he noticed the ticket behind the balcony. It was close to a shop so he thought he’d go in and get the tickets checked, in the hope that something fruitful might happen.

When the store assistant put it in the machine to check, the machine made a really strange sound, something he had never heard before. The strange sound made John think that it might be a special ticket. The store assistant then confirmed that it was a winning ticket and asked him to contact the number on the ticket. Even then, he did not have his hopes high and expected a Rs 100,000 win at the most. He was shocked to find out that he had won the first prize, which was Rs 1 crore per month for the next 30 years.

John, who has decided to give up plastering for good, said, “The era of wielding trowels is over! Gone are the days of returning home covered in plaster dust, consumed by financial concerns for my family. Our lives have undergone an irreversible shift. I am overjoyed that I can now offer assistance to my family and closest companions without any apprehensions. Receiving £100,000 (Rs 1 crore) every month, tax-free, is beyond extraordinary.”
